El 9 de septiembre de 1947, el ordenador Mark II del Laboratorio de Computación de la Universidad de Harvard sufrió un fallo en un relé electromagnético. Cuando los técnicos lo abrieron para comprobar qué sucedía, descubrieron que una polilla se había quedado enganchadaen este componente e impedía su correcto funcionamiento, así queanotaron en un cuaderno lo que habían encontrado y pegaron con cinta adhesiva el insecto, añadiendo la frase «First actual case of bug being found» («Primer caso real de bug encontrado»)
